About EM2

Project Goal

The purpose of the Eliciting Mathematics Misconceptions (EM2) Project was to apply recent advances in cognitive science and mathematics education research to develop an online diagnostic assessment system. The system, appropriate for a variety of classroom settings, enables teachers to quickly and effectively diagnose commonly held student misconceptions and overgeneralizations in the rational number mathematics content area.

Drawing on current research on children’s cognitive development and their own extensive experiences working with teachers and students, EM2 project team members worked collaboratively to develop and validate the EM2 diagnostic assessments. Teachers can use the assessments as part of their formative assessment practice to identify students’ misunderstandings and misconceptions about targeted rational number topics.
